Boy's Brigade

INTRODUCTION
The Boy’s Brigade is an international uniformed Youth Organization which deals with the nurture, character development and disciples of boys. Their importance therefore transcends geographical boundaries and cuts across tribal, denominational and social groupings. The Boy’s Brigade and the Girl’s Brigade are two distinct entities, yet they are organized in the same principle, except that one is for boys and other, for girls.

The Boy’s Brigade was started by Sir William Alexander Smith of the Church of Scotland in Glasgow on 4th October, 1883. Sir Smith was a Sunday school teacher of the church with thirty boys in class. He was also a commander in the Royal Volunteer Force. It was his experience with the men of the  Force which first intrigued and led him to have compassion for the boys in the Sunday School. Accordingly, he introduced the disciplinary methods in the Army to his new organization of the Sunday School Class. The success was quite outstanding. The movement therefore spread quickly throughout the British Isles and beyond.

OBJECTIVES
The advancement of Christ’s kingdom among Boys, and the promotion of the habits of obedience, reverence, discipline, self-respect, and all that tend towards a true Christian manliness. Every company is part of a church or a Christian organization. The Brigade seeks through many societies, to win boys to the service of Christ and His Church.

The foundation of the Brigade is on religion and discipline, usually interpreted through Bible Class, Church service and Drill. On this foundation however, each company builds a programme of activities, physical and education.

In the junior section, members take part in activities suited to their age. At special church services members of the Brigade are engaged in service of security. They watch cars and direct traffic; they arranged seats or direct guests to their appropriate places.

IMPACT
The Brigade discipline moulds the members to be patriotic. The Scripture teaching s nurture them into discipleship for Christ. Some later enter the wider world as military men, Fire Service personnel and disciplined stewards of the church.

The Boys Brigade anthem is: “Will your anchor hold in the storms of life” MHB 634.
